Running ElkAt the present time, the only hunting allowed by non-Southern Ute Tribal members on Southern Ute Tribal lands is the Non-Member Cow Elk Hunt. This is a limited hunt offered every January to Native Americans only. To be eligible for this hunt, an applicant must be an enrolled member of a Federally recognized Indian tribe and have no felony convictions or a record of a hunting, fishing, or wildlife-related offense in the last five years.

The Non-Member Cow Elk Hunt is a management hunt developed to increase harvest on a growing elk population in the San Juan Basin. Started in 2001, the hunt is held over several weeks every January, following Tribal member seasons, and is split between two hunt units on the eastern side of the Southern Ute Reservation. The total number of permits available varies between 100 and 200 permits each year. The hunts provide an affordable opportunity to harvest a cow elk in a reasonably short time frame and within a beautiful setting on Southern Ute Tribal lands.

For the January 2011 hunt, applications will be accepted until October 15, 2010.  Random drawings for permits and hunter notifications will be held in November.  In order to be considered, each application must include a non-refundable $25 application fee (checks or money orders only - NO CASH!).  If selected for the hunt, a remaining $75 permit fee must be paid to the Tribe prior to the hunt.  A mandatory hunter orientation meeting for all hunters is held in Ignacio, Colorado, and hunters must attend this meeting in order to pick up their permits.  All harvested animals must be validated by Tribal officials before leaving the Reservation, and hunter surveys must be returned to the Tribe.  Hunters who fail to meet these requirements will not be welcomed in future hunts.

The hunt application form is available as a downloadable PDF document (see above), and can be printed and mailed to the Tribe during the open application period.  Hunters can also request to receive the application form through U.S. Mail by calling the Southern Ute Wildlife Division at (970) 563-0130.
