MISSION STATEMENT
The Department of Natural
Resources is empowered by the Southern Ute Indian Tribal Council with the
mission to develop, administer and manage the natural resources of the Southern
Ute Indian Reservation for the benefit of the Tribe and Tribal Members.
The Department is entrusted with promoting the beneficial use, protection,
conservation, preservation, and developmental enhancement of the Tribe's natural
resource by using sound administrative, ecological, cultural, socioeconomic and
educational methods for the benefit of present and future generations."
The Administration
Division provides general administrative guidance for and reviews
Departmental and Division programs. It also provides records, file
maintenance, and management services for the Lands and Wildlife Divisions.
The Geographic Information System (GIS) Manager and GIS Analyst verify the accuracy of the current
Southern Ute Indian Tribal land base data with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and
Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) data to ensure Department of Natural Resource (DNR) data is current and
updated as information is received. The DNR has centralized the
location of its data on the DNR server. The DNR will be using the same base
data sets and establishing standards for their data. The GIS Analyst has created
and will be updating DNR geodatabases in ArcGIS. The Lands Division
geodatabases that was established includes feature classes such as Tribal land
status, business leases, special use areas/land dedications and BIA/Government
property. A base data geodatabases has been set up that contains data on
boundaries and sections; the GIS Analyst is in the process of compiling accurate
roads information. All of the DNR Divisions are working with the GIS
Analyst to establish their divisional geodatabases, which will be located on the
DNR's server for DNR staff use. The Information Service Manager
(ISM)
assigns street addresses, as needed, for new and existing Tribal member's home
sites and Southern Ute Tribal buildings. This information is used for,
among other things, 911 services on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation.
It is important for Tribal members to have and post their physical address so that
emergency services (like ambulances and fire-fighting units) can find the
correct house when necessary. Visible addresses also help visitors or
public services such as utility workers in locating a residence. The ISM maintains and updates the Natural Resources Web Site. This home
page has a links to pages that
provide information on each DNR Division.
